Lansing, the capital of Michigan, is 80 miles northwest of Detroit. Originally named the "Town of Michigan," its name was changed to Lansing after it became the state's capital in 1847. Today, the city serves as the governmental seat and home of Michigan State University. It also includes more than 1 million trees, ranking Lansing among the top cities in the United States for its tree-planting ordinances by the Forestry Section of Parks and Recreation.
